Is your child averse to reading? Do they find chores more appealing than books? Are tears shed during reading struggles?
Children who have difficulty with reading tend to avoid it due to various challenges, such as vision issues, learning differences, or weak phonics skills. This avoidance can lead to a negative cycle.
Challenges in Reading
Reading difficulties arise from different factors, creating obstacles that impede the development of reading skills.
Importance of Enjoyable Reading
Besides the benefits of reading improvement, enjoyable reading also plays a crucial role in fostering a love for reading. When children find pleasure in reading, they are more likely to engage in independent reading, which can lead to increased empathy, creativity, and critical thinking skills. Moreover, enjoyable reading can serve as a form of stress relief and relaxation, helping children develop a lifelong habit of reading for pleasure.
The Impact of the Matthew Effect
The Matthew effect illustrates how proficient readers enhance their skills through extensive reading, while struggling readers find it challenging to progress, widening the gap between them.
Early Intervention for Struggling Readers
The Matthew effect negatively affects struggling readers, emphasizing the need for early intervention. Measures such as explicit phonics instruction, regular reading sessions, and encouraging book choices can help reluctant readers.

Theresa,
It’s okay if he doesn’t feel like reading books outside of lessons yet. Early reader books often contain words with complex phonics and concepts that he hasn’t encountered in Level 2. Having many difficult words in a book can be discouraging. We have a list of recommended books for each level of All About Reading. Let me know if you’d like the list emailed to you.
Your son should be fluent in Level 2 stories before moving on to Level 3. If he is still sounding out most words, he should spend more time in Level 2 to build fluency. Can he read Level 1 stories smoothly with minimal assistance? If not, he may not be ready for Level 2 yet. Buddy Reading can help scaffold his reading skills.
Rereading stories from Level 1 or previous lessons in Level 2 can enhance fluency and demonstrate progress. Consider using fluency pages again and try echo reading for practicing expression. Using emojis can make reading with expression more enjoyable. Feel free to reach out if you need more ideas or assistance. I’m here to help!
