What Leads to a Blocked Nose?

What Leads to a Blocked Nose?

Nasal congestion may arise from various sources such as mucus, inflamed blood vessels, sinus infections, and more.

Other common causes of a blocked nose include allergies, colds, flu, and nasal polyps. Allergies can trigger inflammation in the nasal passages, causing them to swell and produce excess mucus. This can lead to congestion and difficulty breathing through the nose. Cold and flu viruses can also cause the nasal passages to become inflamed and produce mucus, resulting in a blocked nose.

In some cases, sinus infections may be the culprit behind a blocked nose. When the sinuses become infected, they can swell and produce mucus, leading to congestion and discomfort. Nasal polyps, which are noncancerous growths in the nasal passages, can also obstruct airflow and cause a blocked nose.

Common Causes of Nasal Congestion:

  • Colds
  • Non-allergic rhinitis
  • Allergic rhinitis

Blocked nose and nasal congestion causes

Infections or allergies typically result in blocked noses and congestion in children.

Colds – A common factor leading to congested noses in children.

Respiratory Infections

Flu – A viral infection that can cause congestion, fever, body aches, fatigue, dry cough, sore throat, headache, sleep disturbances, loss of appetite, upset stomach, or vomiting.

Sinusitis – Often follows a cold and can result in sinus swelling, leading to congestion, pain in various areas, fever, bad breath, irritability, feeding issues, and mouth breathing.

Bronchiolitis – Affects the lower respiratory tract, common in children under two, causing nasal congestion, fever, cough, feeding problems, and wheezing.

Mucus buildup

Infants under six months may have snuffles due to mucus accumulation in their noses and nasal passages, unrelated to infection.

Allergies like hay fever can also cause congestion, lasting for a prolonged period, with clear and watery mucus indicating an allergic reaction.

Obstructions

Nasal obstructions may occur if a child inserts objects into their nostrils, requiring immediate medical attention.

Causes of Nighttime Congestion

Congestion can worsen at night due to mucus pooling while lying down, exacerbated by increased nighttime immune activity.

Duration of Nasal Congestion

Congestion due to a cold may resolve in 5-7 days in children but may persist up to 2 weeks in young children. Congestion from sinusitis or bronchiolitis typically clears in 2-3 weeks, while flu-related congestion improves within about a week. Allergy-induced congestion may last for several months.

Treatment Suggestions

Viral – Most colds clear within two weeks, focus on comfort and ease of breathing.

Bacterial – Antibiotics may be required, consult a General Practitioner.

Allergies – Seek advice from a General Practitioner for suitable treatment.

Home Remedies for Congestion

Steam, fluids, humidifiers, nasal bulbs, and menthol products can aid in relieving congestion and discomfort. Additionally, ensure cleanliness and provide paracetamol for fever.

When to Seek Medical Help

Contact emergency services if a child struggles to breathe, coughs/chokes after feeding, experiences color changes with coughing, seems breathless, cannot eat/talk, or has foreign objects in the nose/throat.

Note: Trust your instincts and consult a General Practitioner if you have any concerns about your child’s health.
